누너붓, 이누티투 언어로 “우리 땅”이라는 뜻으로, 준주는 1999년 노스웨스트 준주 동부 일부에, 이전 키웨이틴 지역 전역을 포함해 세워졌다.
Nunavut, meaning “our land” in Inuktitut, was established in 1999 from the eastern part of the Northwest Territories, including all of the former District of Keewatin.
주도는, 이전에 프로비셔 베이로 불렸던 이칼루이트로, 영국인 탐험가 마틴 프로비셔의 이름에서 따왔는데, 그는 1576년 퀸 엘리자베스1세 명에 따라 해도가 그려지지 않았던 북극 항로를 통과했다.
The capital is Iqaluit, formerly Frobisher Bay, named after the English explorer Martin Frobisher, who penetrated the uncharted Arctic for Queen Elizabeth I in 1576.
19명 주의원이 합의로 주수상과 장관을 선출한다. 인구 약 85%는 이누이트이며 이누티투는 공식 언어로 정규 교육에서 제1 언어다.
The 19-member Legislative Assembly chooses a premier and ministers by consensus. The population is about 85% Inuit, and Inuktitut is an official language and the first language in schools.
