저스틴 트루도 캐나다 총리는 9일 한국 대선 결과에 대한 성명을 발표하면서 윤석열 당선인에게 축하를 전했다.
트루도 총리는 “캐나다 정부를 대표해 윤석열 당선인의 한국 대선 승리를 축하한다”라고 서두를 밝혔다.
이어 트루도 총리는 “캐나다와 한국은 민주주의 가치를 공유하고, 광범위한 무역 및 투자관계를 바탕으로 강한 유대감을 갖고 있다. 우리는 G20, UN, APEC, WTO 및 오타와 그룹을 포함한 세계 무대에서 긴밀이 협력하고 있다”라고 양국 관계를 설명했다.
트루도 총리는 “한카 자유무역협정(FTA)은 아시아 태평양 지역 내에 캐나다의 최초이자 유일한 양국 간 자유무역협정으로 두 나라 모두의 경제 성장과 일자리 창출을 견인하고 있다”라고 덧붙였다.
트루도 총리는 “캐나다와 한국이 내년에 수교 60주년을 맞이할 준비를 하는 가운데, 나는 윤 당선인과 함께 양국 관계를 더욱 공고히하고, 공동 우선 과제를 진행하기를 기대한다”라면서 공동 과제로는 “러시아의 부당한 침략에 맞서 우크라이나와 연대해 함께 서고, 코비드19 팬데믹에서 회복하며, 인도-태평양과 전 세계 평화와 안보를 증진시키는 일을 포함한다”라고 제안했다.
트루도 총리는 “캐나다 정부는 새롭고 종합적인 인도-태평양 전략을 마련하면서 지역 내 파트너십을 강화하는데, 우리는 이를 통해 캐나다와 한국 모두에게 이익이 되는 더 큰 번영과 경제 성장을 도모할 계획이다”라고 말했다.
축사에서 두 차례 등장한 인도-태평양은 인도양과 태평양을 지칭하는 지리적 개념이지만, 동시에 중국을 포위하는 해당 지역의 민주국가 동맹을 의미한다. 캐나다 국내에서는 미국, 호주, 일본과 손을 잡고 중국을 견제해야 한다는 의견이 있는데, 트루도 총리는 한국이 함께하자고 이번에 성명에서 요청한 셈이다. 캐나다 외교 연구소(CGAI)에 따르면, 2020년 설문 결과 캐나다인 83%는 인권과 민주주의 같은 가치가 위기에 처할 때 캐나다는 중국에 맞서야 한다고 보고 있다.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the result of the presidential election in South Korea:
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I congratulate Yoon Suk‑yeol on his victory in South Korea’s presidential election.
“Canada and South Korea enjoy a strong relationship, based on shared democratic values and extensive trade and investment relations. We work closely together on the world stage, including through the G20, the United Nations, the Asia‑Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the Ottawa Group. The Canada‑Korea Free Trade Agreement – Canada’s first and only bilateral free trade agreement in the Asia‑Pacific region – is fostering economic growth and creating jobs in both our countries.
“As Canada and South Korea prepare to celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations next year, I look forward to working with President-elect Yoon to deepen relations between our two countries and advance our shared priorities. This includes standing united with Ukraine in the face of Russia’s unwarranted and unjustifiable invasion, recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, and enhancing peace and security in the Indo-Pacific and around the world.
