[지리] 북방 준주들(The Northern Territories)

노스웨스트 준주, 누너붓 준주, 유콘은 캐나다 전체 국토면적의 ⅓을 차지하지만, 인구는 단 10만 명이다.
The Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon contain one-third of Canada’s land mass but have a population of only 100,000.
이 지역에는 금, 납, 동, 다이아몬드, 아연 광산들이 있다. 석유와 가스 매장지는 현재 개발 중이다.
There are gold, lead, copper, diamond and zinc mines. Oil and gas deposits are being developed.
북부는 종종 “한밤 중 태양의 땅”으로 불리는데 여름이 한창일 때는 낮이 하루 24시간 이어지기 때문이다.
The North is often referred to as the “Land of the Midnight Sun” because at the height of summer, daylight can last up to 24 hours.
겨울에는 태양이 사라지고 어둠이 3개월을 간다. 북방 준주에는 길고 추운 겨울과 짧은 여름이 있다.
In winter, the sun disappears and darkness sets in for three months. The Northern territories have long cold winters and short cool summers.
북부의 대부분은 툰드라로 구성돼 있는데, 광활하며 돌투성이인 북극권 평원을 말한다.
Much of the North is made up of tundra, the vast rocky Arctic plain.
추운 북극권 기후로, 툰드라에는 나무가 없고 토양은 영구 동토다.
Because of the cold Arctic climate, there are no trees on the tundra and the soil is permanently frozen.
일부 주민은 여전히 사냥, 낚시, 덫으로 생계를 이어간다.
Some continue to earn a living by hunting, fishing and trapping.
